The Government of India has announced new import restrictions on certain goods coming from Bangladesh, effective immediately.
This move was made through a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
According to the notification, India imposed a complete ban on import of readymade garments through any land port, with exceptions only through the seaports of Nhava Sheva and Kolkata.
Moreover, the Indian government also imposed a ban on import of fruit and fruit-flavored carbonated drinks through certain Land Customs Stations and Inland Container Depots in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and West Bengal.
Restrictions on processed food items such as baked goods, snacks, chips, and confectionery also imposed through specified regions.
The South Asian country also imposed a ban on cotton and cotton yarn waste imports through select LCSs.
India restricted imports of plastic and PVC finished goods except pigments, dyes, plasticizers, and granules used as input for domestic industries in India.
Moreover, wooden furniture imports will also face restrictions.
However, the notification clarifies that these restrictions are not applicable to imports of fish, LPG, edible oil, and crushed stone from Bangladesh.
Moreover, exports from Bangladesh to Nepal and Bhutan that transit through India will also be exempted from these restrictions.
This policy update comes amid ongoing efforts by the Indian government to regulate and monitor cross-border trade for better economic and security management, the notification added.
