Following the incident, the university authorities at an emergency meeting attended by the local government, rural development and cooperatives adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and the university vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, took some decisions to tighten security in the Suhrawardy Udyan area.

The decisions include beginning search operations at the udyan area from today, closing the udyan gate adjacent to the university’s Teacher-Student Centre permanently, the formation of a monitoring committee led by the public works ministry with representatives from other concerned authorities for permanent development of the udyan like that of Ramna Park, and the installation of CCTV cameras, lights and a police box at the udyan.

The dispute escalated into a scuffle, during which Shahriar was stabbed in the right thigh with a sharp weapon while his friends were also hit by bricks.

The assailants fled the scene after the attack, the release said.

Shahriar’s friends and locals then rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The victim’s brother SAM Shariful Alam filed a murder case with Shahbagh police station in connection with the incident, the release said.
