The government on Tuesday suspended 14 more senior officials of the National Board of Revenue.

All of them were also made ‘officers on special duty’ for defying directives from higher authorities and disobeying transfer orders.

With these 14, 15 senior NBR officials were suspended, four were sent into retirement, and the Anti-Corruption Commission investigations were launched against 16 officials in three phases in the aftermath of the tax officials’ protests against the restructuring of the revenue board and other issues.

Regarding the suspensions, Internal Resources Division under the finance ministry on Tuesday issued separate notifications signed by NBR chairman Abdur Rahman Khan, who is also the secretary at the IRD.

‘Due to their defiant behaviour such as openly tearing up transfer orders issued on June 22 in an act of blatant disregard, and for supporting individuals who also disobeyed such orders, it was decided to initiate departmental proceedings against them,’ said the IRD notifications.

The suspended officials were mostly the frontrunners of the recently ended protests under the NBR  Reform Unity Council against the splitting of the revenue board.

The suspended officials are Tauhid Hasan Shakil, deputy tax commissioner of Cumilla, Nusrat Jahan Shoshi, deputy tax commissioner of Rangpur, Mohammad Shihabul Islam, deputy tax commissioner of Khulna, Ashraful Alam Prodhan, joint tax commissioner of Cox’s Bazar, Monalisa Shahreen Susmita, joint tax commissioner of Noakhali, Mohammad Morshed Uddin Khan, joint commissioner of tax, Kushtia, Murad Ahmed, joint tax commissioner at tax zone-15 of Dhaka, Masuma Khatun, joint tax commissioner at tax zone-2 of Dhaka, Mirza Ashiq Rana, additional commissioner of tax at tax zone-8 of Dhaka, Mohammad Shahadat Jamil, second secretary of NBR, Hasan Mohammad Tarek Rikabder, additional commissioner, Sifat-E-Mariyam, deputy commissioner at NSW project, Shafiul Bashar, revenue officer, and Sabuj Mia, revenue officer.

Among Tuesday’s suspended officials, Hasan Mohammad Tarek Rikabder was the president of the NBR Reform Unity Council, with Mirza Ashiq Rana serving as senior vice-president.

Monalisa Shahreen Susmita and Morshed Uddin Khan were spokespersons of the protesting platform.

Moreover, among the suspended officials, Hasan Mohammad Tarek Rikabder, Mirza Ashiq Rana, Monalisa Shareen Sushmita, Morshed Uddin Khan, and Mohammad Shihabul Islam are under the ACC scrutiny.

NBR officials expressed fear that more senior officials might face the same fate in the coming days.

They also said that a fresh suspension of 14 officials in a single day spread shock and panic among them, as they had been in unease since June 29 when their protests ended.

Since the cessation of the protests, hundreds of NBR officials sought an apology from the NBR chairman at several phases. However, the suspensions continued.

NBR officials had held protest programmes against the restructuring of the revenue board and their protests intensified after the interim government introduced the Revenue Policy and Revenue Management Ordinance 2025 on May 12.

The splitting led to protests, including pen-down strikes, sit-ins, and non-cooperation, for nearly one and a half months.

On May 25, the government announced plans to amend the ordinance by July 31.

NBR officials conducted a march to the NBR and a ‘complete shutdown’ in June 28-29, disrupting business and revenue collection.

In response, the interim government declared NBR services ‘essential,’ leading to the withdrawal of protests following negotiations among the government, businesses and the protesting officials.
