Two siblings died after a fire broke out at their house in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram this afternoon.
The victims were identified as Jaheda Akter, 14, and Abdul Malek, 3. Their parents, Md Hasan and Halima Begum, work at a nearby brick kiln. The family is originally from the Lakshmipur district.
The incident occurred around 2:30pm in Lotmoni area of Sadhanpur union around noon.
Mohammad Firoz Kutubi, a senior official of Satkania Fire Service, said the fire broke out at a tin-roofed house with earthen walls near the brick kiln.
“The two siblings were burned to death in the fire. Their bodies were later recovered and handed over to police,” he said.
Khaled Saifullah, officer-in-charge of the Banshkhali Police Station, said, “We suspect the children could not get out of the house after the fire started.
He added that the children’s parents were working at the brick kiln, when the fire broke out.
“The cause of the fire could not be known immediately. However, the house had an electricity connection and a gas cylinder, the OC said, adding that the bodies were sent to the morgue for autopsy.
