A Dhaka court has placed former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on a four-day remand for interrogation in a case filed over alleged irregularities and bias during the past three national elections.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman passed the order today after police produced him before the court with a 10-day remand plea, said a sub-inspector assigned to the court.
Huda was brought to the courtroom at 4:10pm amid heavy security.
Smiling, he stood in the dock as his helmet and handcuffs were removed.
The magistrate entered the courtroom around 4:17pm, and the hearing began shortly afterwards.
While Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi was delivering his speech for granting the police remand, Nurul Huda seemed upset in the dock.
During the hearing, a defence lawyer told the court that the charges brought against his client are all bailable sections of the Penal Code.
The case has a legal flaw; so it will be contrary to the law if he is placed on remand in this case, he added.
At 4:55pm, Nurul Huda spoke in the courtroom.
He told the court that 15-17 lakh people were involved in conducting the elections.
There is no scope to monitor from Dhaka what happened in remote areas, he said.
Yesterday, he was arrested after a mob assaulted him at his Uttara residence.
The BNP had filed a case earlier in the day with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda and Kazi Habibul Awal, ten former election commissioners, and 11 others for their alleged role in irregularities and biases during the national elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
Earlier in the day, a five-member BNP delegation, led by party executive committee member Salah Uddin Khan, also delivered a copy of the case application to CEC AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission.
The BNP alleges that in all three parliamentary elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024, their leaders and supporters were targeted with false cases, abductions, and threats. It says many were arrested or harassed so that they could not take part in the polls.
The accused in the case, according to the BNP, were involved in irregularities during the three national elections.
Also named in the case are ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan.
The list of accused includes former inspectors general of police Hasan Mahmud Khandker, Javed Patwary, and Shahidul Haque; former DMP commissioner Benazir Ahmed; former Special Branch chief Monirul Islam; and former chiefs of the National Security Intelligence and the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence.
The BNP said these individuals were responsible for voter intimidation, and manipulation of the electoral process.
