Tetulia of Panchagarh district has been experiencing country’s lowest temperature below 10°C for the last week.
Chilly winds intensified winter woes in the northern region. The biting cold has pushed winter severity to a higher level.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said Tetulia on Monday recorded the country’s lowest temperature 9°C with 97% humidity and light fog blanketing the area.
Cold weather is causing acute suffering, particularly for low-income labourers. Driven by the need to earn a livelihood, they are forced to work in open fields and outdoors, enduring bone-chilling conditions that have made daily life increasingly difficult. Although sunshine appeared later in the day, it failed to bring noticeable warmth.
Chittagong, Ambagan and Bandarban in the southeast part of the country registered the country’s highest temperature at 32°C on Sunday, underscoring the stark north-south divide in weather conditions.
The BMD statistics showed that the minimum temperature in Tetulia has been hovering around the 10°C mark for seven straight days and there is a prediction to fall further in the coming days.
According to the Tetulia Weather Observation Centre, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9°C at 9am this morning. During the period, humidity stood at 89%, while wind speed ranged between 9 and 10 kilometres per hour.
On the previous day, Sunday, the minimum temperature was also recorded at 9°C while on Saturday, the minimum temperature stood at 9.3°C and the same temperature of 9.3°C was recorded on Friday as well.
The lowest temperature of the current season was recorded Thursday, when the mercury in Tetulia dipped to 8.9°C.
