Speakers, including persons with disabilities, on Wednesday stressed the need for coordinated efforts between government and non-government sectors to ensure continued development of persons with disabilities.

At a seminar titled ‘Importance of Public-Private Sectors’ Initiatives to Ensure Continued Development of Persons with Disabilities’, speakers also emphasised the importance of public funding for Organisations of Persons with Disabilities to ensure the sustainability of their work.

B-SCAN, a women-led organisation of Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with National Council of Disabled Women and Disabled Welfare Society organised the seminar at the Bangla Academy auditorium in the capital.

B-SCAN general secretary Salma Mahbub, who conducted the seminar, emphasised the importance of collaboration between donor agencies and Organisations of Persons with Disabilities, underscoring the need for a national mapping of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities that are capable of delivering quality work and driving positive change.

She suggested that the Department of Social Services and Jatiyo Protibondhi Unnayan Foundation could take the initiative in this regard.

Noting that Organisations of Persons with Disabilities mostly receive funding from the private sector, including NGOs, she emphasised the need for public funding to ensure the sustainability of their work.

Presiding over the event, Department of Social Services director general Md Saidur Rahman Khan expressed hope that the allocation for persons with disabilities would be more visible in the forthcoming budget and pledged to complete the mapping of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities by next year.

NGDO general secretary Saifur Rahman, who delivered the keynote speech, recommended including Organisations of Persons with Disabilities in all types of development platforms, providing grants from the Jatiyo Protibondhi Unnayan Foundation on an annual basis instead of every 2–3 years, and allocating yearly grants to these organisations through the establishment of a Department for the Development of Persons with Disabilities.
