Four people, including two schoolgirls, were killed and two others injured when a bus rammed into a battery-run human hauler and a rickshaw-van in Tangail's Dhanbari upazila today.
The deceased are human hauler riders Roshni Akter (13) and Bithi Akter (13) of Baghil village and its driver Abdul Hakim (65) of Norilla village in Dhanbari upazla. Mostofa Miah (52) of Hadira village of Gopalpur upazila of Tangail, a rickshaw-van passenger, also died in the accident.
Roshni and Bithi were the class seven students of local Bhaighat High School, reports our Tangail correspondent.
Farhana Afroz, assistant superintendent of police (Madhupur Circle) in Tangail, told The Daily Star that the accident took place on Tangail-Jamalpur highway in Baghil area around 1:00pm.
On information, members of Fire Service and Civil Defence from Dhanbari rescued four injured and rushed them to Madhupur Upazila Health Complex.
One of the schoolgirls was declared dead when she was rushed to the health complex while the other schoolgirl succumbed to her injuries at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Idris Ali, a sub-inspector of Dhanbari Police Station, police seized the bus but its driver managed to flee from the scene.
Protesting the accident, locals blocked the highway for one hour, creating a long tailback on both sides of the highway.
Normal traffic operation resumed there after police cleared the blockade.
