Nahid says NCP not a part of Jamaat-led protests

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam today said his party does not want proportional representation (PR) system for the lower house of the parliament in the upcoming general election.

"We are not part of the Jamaat-led protests as we oppose the PR system in the lower house. We want PR only in the upper house and an effective upper house to ensure accountability," he said while talking to reporters after National Coordination Meeting of the party.

He also said NCP is not considering any alliance with major parties at this moment.

"We will move forward with our independent political agenda," he said.

Responding to a query on the recent flash processions of Awami League and its affiliated bodies, Nahid said, "Awami League and its front organisations are daring to carry out such activities on the streets as they are getting backing from the government and the state machinery."

Their targets are NCP leaders and activists, leaders of the July uprising, and families of the martyred and injured, he said.

He further stressed the need for unity against the Awami League whose political activities have been banned.

Replying to a query on Jatiya Party, Nahid said the party and its Chairman GM Quader is an "aide of the fascist Awami League" and should be brought under the law.

He also demanded an investigation and trial against Awami League as a party.
