Police sprayed water through cannons and fired sound grenades to disperse protesters in front of National Press Club in the Dhaka city on Sunday morning.
Candidates who failed in the viva-voice exam of the recent Non -Government Teachers Registration and Certification Authority were staging the protest demanding that the authorities should pass them all and give them certificates.
Around 500 to 600 protesters blocked road in front of the press club at about 10:00am and police used force at about 11:00am for clearing the road, according to police.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna Division deputy commissioner Masud Alam told New Age that they sprayed water and fired sound grenades to disperse protesters as blocking road for an hour created severe traffic congestions and caused huge suffering to people.
‘We, first, requested them not to block the road and we would help them to communicate with the ministry and the NTRC authorities; but they wanted chief adviser to come in front of the press club for accepting their demand,’ he added.
Masud said that it was not possible for the head of the government to come in front of the press club.
‘We used force to disperse them from road as section 144 was also imposed in the area. Now, situation is under control and vehicular movement returned to normalcy,’ the DC Ramna said.
