Police today arrested three persons in connection with the killing of a Dhaka University student near Suhrawardy Udyan late last night.
Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division Police, said the arrestees are outsiders. They are Tamim Hawlader, 30, Samrat Mallic, 28, and Palash Sarder, 30.
The victim, Shahriar Alam Shammo, 25, was the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
Ashraful Islam Rafi, a fellow student, said Shammo, hailing from Ullapara in Sirajganj, was a student of the Institute of Education and Research (2018–19 session) and a resident of Room 222 of the dormitory.
Rafi said Shammo was riding his motorcycle near Suhrawardy Udyan when it collided with another bike. This led to an altercation and a scuffle. At one-point, unidentified individuals stabbed him in the right thigh before fleeing.
He was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
