The Bangladesh Nationalist Party would begin discussions on Jatiya Sangsad seat sharing with its political allies after the official announcement of the JS election schedule, according to party standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting between the BNP liaison committee and the Gono Odhikar Parishad at the BNP chair’s Gulshan office in the capital city, he said that the party had not  yet reached the stage to initiate such talks.

The process would begin once election-related activities start and the schedule is announced, Khasru said.

Earlier, in the day, Khasru held a meeting with the European Union ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller also at the BNP chair’s office.

After the meeting Khasru said that the EU had expressed its satisfaction with Bangladesh’s move towards a national election expected in February and reaffirmed its readiness to engage with the elected government to support future development and institutional reforms.

‘The election was the top priority in our discussion. The EU is waiting for an elected government, so they can move forward with their short-, medium-, and long-term plans for cooperation,’ Khasru told reporters after the meeting with the EU ambassador.

Khasru said that the talks also covered issues related to labour rights, judicial independence, and strengthening parliamentary transparency.

The discussions also encompassed how a credible election could pave the way for national stability and long-term policy planning, essential for both domestic governance and international cooperation, the BNP leader added.

Labour rights were another key area of discussion, reflecting the EU’s longstanding engagement in worker welfare in Bangladesh, Khasru said.

‘The EU wants to help build institutional capacity, especially by supporting a secretariat for parliament to improve performance and accountability,’ he said.

‘The EU is considering new avenues for economic collaboration beyond traditional loans and grants. These include innovative financing methods such as green bonds and other sustainability-linked instruments, with a goal to strengthen both the public and private sectors in Bangladesh,’ Khasru said.

Khasru also addressed the issue of constitutional reform, highlighting BNP’s longstanding proposal to limit the prime minister’s tenure to two terms.

‘This has been part of BNP’s Vision 2030 and there is now consensus on the matter, leaving no room for disagreement,’ he went on to say.
