A case has been filed after a man was brutally hacked in public in Dhaka's Central Road, an incident that was caught on CCTV and widely circulated on social media.
The attack occurred around 11:30pm on Sunday near Bhuter Goli on Central Road.
The victim, 35-year-old Saif Hossain Munna, is currently undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation.
Munna's sister, Jamila Kabir Laboni, lodged an attempted murder case with New Market Police Station against five named individuals — MC Shuvo, 35, Mamun, 32, Rana, 33, Shamim, 31, and Mobarak, 33 — alongside several unidentified persons.
All the named accused are residents of Bhuter Goli.
"The victim's sister has filed a case. We are conducting drives to arrest the accused," said Assistant Commissioner Tariq Latif of the New Market Zone.
Police said Munna, a BNP activist and local resident, was the target of a premeditated assault.
According to the first information report (FIR), Mamun lured Munna to the front of Sumiya Hotel to meet Shuvo.
When Munna arrived, he was pushed to the ground by an attacker on a motorcycle, who was accompanied by two unidentified accomplices.
Moments later, CCTV footage shows another motorcycle arriving with Shuvo and Rana, who began attacking Munna with a Chinese axe.
Despite his desperate screams, no bystanders intervened.
The entire incident lasted barely two minutes, with the assailants fleeing the scene around 11:32pm.
A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "The attack appears to be the fallout of a long-standing dispute and a power struggle for dominance in the area. All the named suspects are members of Jubo Dal (BNP's youth wing)."
"We also have information suggesting that these groups may have ties with a prominent criminal gang operating in the locality," the official added.
