A Dhaka court today sent popular actor Nusraat Faria to jail in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after police produced her before the court, seeking her confinement in jail, said a court police official.
At 10:00am, Nusraat Faria was escorted to the courtroom of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka amid tight security.
During the half-hour-long hearing, she stood silent in the dock.
The court set May 22 for the a petition filed a defence lawyer seeking bail for Nusraat.
By this time, the investigator was asked to submit a report before the court verifying the actor's visa-related documents, which were submitted in support of the bail petition.
On March 27 this year, one Enamul Haque, who sustained bullet injuries on July 19 last year during the quota reform protests in the city's Bhatara area, filed the case with the court against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, 17 actors, and 265 others.
On May 3, the officer-in-charge of Bhatara Police Station registered it as a First Information Report (FIR) as per the court's directions.
The 17 actors include Nusraat Faria, Apu Biswas, Nipun Akter, Syeda Kamrun Naher Shahnur, Urmila Srabonti Kar, Sohana Saba, Tanvin Sweety, Meher Afroz Shaon, Zakia Moon, Jyotika Jyoti, Suborna Mustafa, Azizul Hakim, Ashna Habib Bhabna, Symon Sadik, Zayed Khan, Rokeya Prachy, and Tareen Jahan.
They were accused as the financiers of the Awami League during the quota reform protests.
