Google has agreed to pay $135 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging its Android operating system collected users' cellular data without permission.

As per a Reuters report on the matter, the preliminary settlement, filed in federal court in California, covers people who used Android-powered mobile devices since November 12, 2017. The plaintiffs accused Google of collecting data even when apps were closed, location-sharing was disabled, or screens were locked, calling the practice an illegal "conversion" of their purchased mobile data for Google's product development and advertising.

Google denied any wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement, which requires a judge's approval, according to the Reuters report. As part of the deal, Google will not transfer data without user consent during phone setup and will make it easier for users to stop the data transfers. The company will also update its disclosures in the Google Play terms of service, adds the report.
