Miscreants vandalised at least four to five idols of Hindu deities at three temples in Kanachgari area under the newly formed Mokamtala upazila of Bogura.

The attacks took place at the Kanachgari Shiva Temple, Shitala Temple and Mahashmashan Temple sometime on Friday night, according to temple committee sources.

Devotees discovered the damaged idols around 12:00pm yesterday when they arrived to perform regular religious rituals and immediately informed the local administration.

Md Shahinuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station, confirmed the incidents.

Upon receiving the information, Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Ziaur Rahman visited the sites yesterday.

“No one could pinpoint the exact time of the vandalism. The administration is investigating the matter. The culprits managed to carry out the act easily because the temples are located outside the main locality,” he told The Daily Star.

He said necessary action would be taken following the investigation.

The OC said the three temples are situated away from the village, near a crematorium and in open fields.

“Looking at the idols, it appears they were vandalised a few days ago, and the villagers noticed it later,” he said.

Police have begun investigating the incidents but have not yet received any written complaint.

“Legal action will be taken once a written complaint is filed,” the OC added.
