A man was shot dead in broad daylight in front of Dhaka National Medical College Hospital in Sutrapur, Dhaka, on Monday morning.

The victim, identified as 55-year-old Tarik Saif Mamun, was described in multiple media reports as a “top criminal.”

Police and eyewitnesses said Mamun was shot at close range by unidentified attackers. He was later found lying on the ground with bullet wounds.

Court documents show that on the night of February 25, 1997, a 25-year-old man named Zahid Amin, alias Himel, was shot dead in the PC Culture Housing area of Mohammadpur. Himel’s friend Saif was also injured that night.

Following the incident, Himel’s mother, Jafrun Nahar, filed a case naming seven people and accusing two to three unidentified individuals.

After investigation, a charge sheet was submitted on September 17 of the same year against six people, including Tarik Saif Mamun. The other accused are Osman, Masud alias Nazmul Hossain, Ratan, Imon, and Helal.

Judge Mominun Nesar of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 had scheduled Monday for witness examination in the case. Mamun appeared in court, but no witnesses were present. The court then rescheduled the hearing for February 4 next year.

After leaving court, Mamun went to Dhaka National Medical College.

CCTV footage shows that around 10:51am, Mamun was leaving the hospital. After crossing the main gate and walking a short distance, he suddenly ran back inside as gunfire erupted. Patients and visitors were seen scattering in panic.

Md Tarek, a hospital security official, said two assailants opened fire at Mamun. The first bullets struck the hospital’s window glass, and five more shots followed—three hitting Mamun. He was rushed to the emergency department and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to his critical condition.

Tarek added that he heard Mamun had come to the hospital to give money to a beggar who had asked for food, while others claimed he was there to park his car.

Mamun’s lawyer, Mehedi Hasan, confirmed his client had appeared in court that morning. “The case dates back to 1997. As no witnesses appeared, we requested the court to close the case, but another date was set for witness examination,” he said.
