All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan made his return to competitive cricket since the 2024 Bangladesh Premier League as he played in Sheikh Jamal’s 40-run win over City Club in the 2024 Dhaka Premier League on Wednesday.

In the other matches of the day, Abahani Limited thrashed Brothers Union by eight wickets, while Prime Bank Cricket Club beat Rupganj Tigers by the same margin.

Shakib was granted leave from Bangladesh’s series against Sri Lanka following the 2024 BPL and had also missed Sheikh Jamal’s first three games after joining them from Mohammedan SC this season.

On Wednesday, in a rain-hit match at BKSP, Shakib returned and scored 19 off 14 balls but it was skipper Nurul Hasan Sohan’s unbeaten 72 and Yasir Ali Chowdhury’s 78 that guided Sheikh Jamal to 218-5 in 34 overs.

In reply, City Club could only manage 178-9 in their innings as Shakib picked up three wickets, alongside three wickets from Ripon Mondol and two from Shafiqul Islam.

In the other game at BKSP, which was also reduced to 34 overs, three wickets from Nazmul Islam Apu and two wickets from Alok Kapali and Ashiqur Zaman saw Prime Bank bowl Rupganj Tigers out for 132.

In reply, skipper Tamim Iqbal’s 67 and Parvez Hossain Emon’s 50 saw Prime Bank pick up their fourth win in four matches.

In Narayanganj, left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam’s five-wicket haul saw Brothers bowled out for just 71 as Rakibul Hasan and Al Fahad also picked up two wickets each.

30 runs from Mohammad Naim and an unbeaten 23 from Afif Hossain saw Abahani chase down the total in just 12.3 overs to climb to the top of the table with eight points from four games.
