A man, accused of raping a three-year-old girl, got killed in a ‘gunfight’ with a Rapid Action Battalion team at Kurushkul area in Cox’s Bazar on early Tuesday.
Deceased Mohammad Selim, 22, was from Natun Fisherypara near Airport Gate under Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, police confirmed.
‘Selim was the lone accused in the case of raping a three-year-old girl, also his neighbour, on August 23 and the case was filed on August 27. We found no other case against him,’ Cox’s Bazar police station officer-in-charge Ranajit Kumar Barua told New Age.
With the death of Selim, at least six people were killed in separate ‘gunfight’ incidents with law enforcers at six different places in the country in past five days, according to reports published in newspapers.
RAB-7 deputy director Ruhul Amin said a RAB team, on information, conducted a drive at Kurushkul area to arrest Selim.
As the elite force members reached the area, Selim and his accomplices opened fire on RAB forcing them to retaliate, said Ruhul Amin.
At one stage of the gunfight, perpetrators fled away, however, the RAB men found a man lying on the ground with bullet wounds and they took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
He said they also found two firearms and seven bullets on the spot.
The RAB officer also said that two of their colleagues were also got hurt.
