The police attack on the protesting students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was being investigated and action would be taken against those involved, if the allegation is proved to be true, said Police Headquarters today.

Md Haider Ali Khan, deputy inspector general of police (operations, media and planning) shared the information with journalists at a press briefing held at the Police Headquarters marking the Police Week.

"Universities have separate rules and regulations. It has its own body. Police are there to maintain the law and order situation and not to interfere in the university's internal affairs," said the DIG.

When asked, whether action would be taken against the police personnel based on the allegation of protesting students for launching attack on them, the police official said, "An investigation is underway regarding the matter".

"If the allegation against any police personnel involved in the attack is proved to be true, of course, we will take action," he added.

A group of SUST students on January 13 began demonstrations demanding the removal of their dormitory's provost Zafrin Ahmed Liza, for misbehaving with a student.

Police on January 16, fired rubber bullets and hurled sound grenades on the agitating students, triggering a clash that left more than 30 students injured.
