Agriculture department statistics state 17,800 farmers from the district have been brought under the agriculture incentive program from Nilphamari in the ongoing 2019-2020 fiscal year

The government is giving various kinds of incentives to further the agriculture sector. As a result, the agriculture scenario in Nilphamari has undergone massive changes thanks to those incentives and subsidies.

Sources at the district agriculture department office say incentives are being m given to the farmers to encourage more farming. 

Additionally, the government is also undertaking agriculture rehabilitation programs to support those affected by floods and other natural calamities.

On the other hand, crores of taka is being disbursed in subsidies for fertilizers and agricultural machinery to the farmers.

Under the program, the farmers received wheat, maize, onion, mustard and moog lentil.

Those who received 20 kilogram of wheat for one bigha of land also received 20kg of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and 10kg Muriate of Potash (potassium chloride) fertilizers.

Md Moksen Ali, 50, a farmer from Sarkarpara village of Sadar upazila said, to recuperate for his losses faced in previous floods and other disasters, he has begun harvesting maize in advance.

A paddy farmer previously, he resorted to maize cultivation as it required very little capital, and he received free seedlings and fertilizers as he was part of the incentive program.

Md Rezaul Islam, a maize trader at Ramnagar union, said depending on the maize quality, a kg of the crop fetched Tk700-920 currently.

Sirajul Islam, another maize farmer from the same union, cultivated the crop on two bighas of land. But as part of the incentive program, he received seeds and fertilizers for one bigha of land completely free.

"This saved me a lot of money, which I used to cultivate wheat on an additional bigha of land nearby," he added.

Md Kamrul Hasan, agriculture officer at Nilphamari Sadar upazila, said that apart from subsidies, government surveillance and agricultural research have made it possible to achieve success in agriculture. 

"Especially since farmers are able to buy fertilizers and agricultural machinery in small quantities at hand, they have turned around," he added. 

Sirajul Islam, deputy director at Nilphamara Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office, said the government's incentive program has attracted a lot of farmers' interest, which helped 17,800 to be part of the program.

This program will help many farmers to become self-sufficient, he added.
