A delegation from UNESCO met with home minister Salahuddin Ahmed at his office in the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday, where both sides discussed cooperation in police training, media relations, and freedom of expression.
The three-member UNESCO delegation was led by country representative Susan Vize, according to a press release.
Other members included Farhana Shahnaz, head of communication and information, and Shakil M Faisal, media and information project lead.
During the meeting, discussions focused on police training and reform, strengthening relations between law enforcement and the media, safeguarding freedom of expression, and training opportunities for journalists, the release added.
Welcoming the delegation, the home minister congratulated Susan Vize on her new portfolio.
In response, Vize expressed appreciation and reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to ongoing projects related to training for both police and journalists.
She noted that UNESCO has already held discussions with the inspector general of police regarding training initiatives and expressed hope that, subject to ministry approval, the programme could begin by June.
The minister agreed in principle and directed relevant authorities to expedite arrangements.
According to Vize, UNESCO has previously trained around 700 police officers of SP and OC ranks ahead of national elections.
She also mentioned plans to organise similar training programmes for media professionals.
Salahuddin suggested expanding the initiative to include DIG- and SP-level officers at divisional headquarters, with a focus on officers working in media units within the police.
He also proposed holding the training sessions on Saturdays to ensure better participation.
Reiterating the government’s stance, the minister said Bangladesh supports freedom of the press and expression while emphasising the importance of accountability.
He underscored the need to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation between police and journalists.
Senior officials from the home ministry, including joint secretary Rebeka Khan and deputy secretary Begum Minara Nazmeen, were also present at the meeting.
