BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that supporters of his party had been receiving threats ahead of the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) elections.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader came up with the allegation while campaigning for BNP’s mayoral candidate Kawsar Zaman.

“Supporters of our party are being threatened in various ways. However, our leaders and activists will not leave the field no matter what,” Fakhrul said.

After arriving in Saidpur on Monday noon, Fakhrul attended several rallies in the Rangpur city. The RCC elections are scheduled to be held on 21 December.

“The Election Commission is not neutral. A fair election is not possible under this government. Even the government itself does not want the biggest opposition party to take part in the polls. They want to establish a unitary regime,” the BNP leader alleged.

Fakhrul said the BNP was observing the government’s role in the election. “Our next steps depend on it,” he added.
