At least five people were injured in a clash between two groups of Awami League over establishing supremacy at Borobari Bogura village of Shailakupa upazila in Jhenaidah on Monday.

The identities of the injured could not be known immediately, police said.

There had been a longstanding dispute between the supporters of Bogura union parishad chairman Nazrul Islam and Jhenaidah district Juba League convener Shafiqul Islam Shimul over establishing supremacy in the area, Shailakupa police station officer-in-charge Jahangir Hossain said.

Following the dispute, the supporters of the two groups swooped on each other with sharp weapons, leaving at least five people of both groups injured.

Locals rescued the injured and admitted them to Shailakupa Upazila Health Complex for treatment, the OC said.

Later, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Additional police personnel had been deployed in the area to avert further incident, the OC added.
