Nazmul Abedin Fahim is not the most well-known name among Bangladesh’s cricket fans but is a very trusted man among the country’s cricketers. Leading cricketers and upcoming players alike trust him when it comes to seeking solutions to technical issues. Stalwarts like Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim have been known to take advice from him during rough patches.

Being a mentor to many cricketers, it was cause for confusion and consternation in the cricket fraternity when news broke on Monday that Fahim had tendered his resignation to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). In the aftermath, many in social media have come down hard on the board. Fahim worked at the BCB in many capacities and had most recently been looking after the women’s cricket team as the national manager of the board’s women’s wing.

Fahim, citing personal reasons for his decision, wanted his resignation to be effective from October 1 this year.

“I have decided to quit the job. Let the board accept my resignation. I have been working for long, so I need a break,” Fahim told The Daily Star on Tuesday, opting not to go into further details about his decision.

When contacted, BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury said: “Yes, Fahim bhai tendered his resignation and the board will now take a decision in due course. As CEO I have personally requested him to continue in his job. But he has his own plans and we cannot force him.”

The board has been criticised for failing to properly utilise his experience and according to sources close to developments, Fahim was not happy with his current role and was keener to go back to his previous department -- the development committee.
