'prime minister asked all the officials concerned to become cautious in project-related purchase'

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed all concerned to be careful while dealing with public purchases in development projects to ensure transparency in spending.

“She (prime minister) asked all the officials concerned to become cautious in project-related purchase,” Planning Minister MA Mannan told reporters.

Mannan was briefing reporters on the outcome of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, held at NEC auditorium in Agargaon.

The directives from Hasina came after a number of money embezzlement incidents surfaced in recent times in the process of public spending under different development projects.

One of such irregularities took place at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant recently. The ministry concerned and several other agencies, including the Anti-Corruption Commission, are investigating the scam. 

Media reports also discovered similar anomalies in purchase and recruitment at different government institutions.

Mannan said the ECNEC meeting approved eight projects involving Tk8,968.80 crore.
