The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party expelled 73 party people for taking part in the first phase of upazila parishad elections scheduled to be held on May 8 defying the party decision.
BNP published a list of names of the expelled party people by sending a notification to the media on Friday.
The notification was signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
According to the notification, the 73 leaders of the BNP and its associate bodies who are contesting posts of chairmen, vice-chairmen, and female vice-chairmen in the first phase of upazila polls in violation of the party decision have been expelled from all party positions, including its primary membership.
Among the candidates, 28 are vying for the posts of upazila chairmen, 24 for vice-chairmen posts, and 21 for the positions of female vice-chairmen.
Earlier, the BNP decided not to join any elections under the ruling Awami League government and the present Election Commission.
A total of 152 upazilas out of 492 across the country will go to the polls in the first phase on May 8, as per the schedule announced by the Election Commission.
