In response to the sting of sexual misconduct allegations were made against dozens of Hollywood stars, “Commission on Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace” was formed on Friday.

Chaired by lawyer Anita Hill, the group will be convened by the President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy, Nike co-chair Maria Eitel, lawyer Nina Show and venture capitalist Freada Kapor Klein.

The first meeting of the commission was attended by representatives of industry giants. Among others, the Hollywood leaders including Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy and chairman of Disney Robert A Igerthe attended the meeting.

“The Commission will not seek just one solution, but a comprehensive strategy to address the complex and inter-related causes of the problems of parity and power,” said Kennedy during the press conference.

Anita Hill brought the sexual harassment to national attention in the US in 1991 when she publicly claimed that she had been sexually harassed by her boss Clarence Thomas.

Supreme Court nominee Thomas had supervised her at the Department for Education and at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Now a professor of social policy at Brandeis University in Boston, she said it was time to end the culture of silence.

“This moment presents us with an unprecedented opportunity to make a real change,” said Anita Hill.

“I’m proud to be leading this newly-formed Commission on a long overdue journey to adopt best practices and to create institutional change that fosters a culture of respect and human dignity throughout the industry,” she added.

“We will be focusing on issues ranging from power disparity, equity and fairness, safety, education and training, reporting and enforcement, ongoing research and data collection and sexual harassment guidelines,” she said.
