The government has fixed Tk 8000 as monthly minimum wage for the workers of the country's plastic sector, announcing a 56.86 per cent hike.

A 5.0 per cent annual increment of the basic has also been announced, first of its kind, for the sector.

Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) on June 28 issued a gazette notification in this regard.

The minimum monthly wage for the sector workers and employees was fixed at Tk 5,100 in 2012.

A plastic factory worker from grade IV will receive Tk 8000 as minimum monthly wage.

The basic payment has been fixed at Tk 5,000, up from Tk 3,500, whereas house rent at Tk 2,000 against Tk 1050, according to the gazette notification.

The medical and transportation allowances have been fixed at Tk 500 and Tk 300 respectively. The allowances have been increased by Tk 200 and Tk 150 respectively, it showed.

Food allowance has been increased by Tk 100 to Tk 200.

An apprentice worker will get Tk 6500 as gross monthly wage.

According to industry insiders, there are more than 5000 plastic industries across the country, majority of them are small and medium ones.

The sector, directly and indirectly, has created employment for more than 1.2 million people.

The size of domestic market is Tk 300 billion and per capita consumption of plastics in Bangladesh is over 10 kg per year, according to them.

Wage board officials, however, said the government has also formed wage boards to review monthly minimum wages for the workers of salt crushing, auyurbedic, construction and saw mills sectors.

Representatives from owners and workers respectively have been nominated from the concerned sectors through issuing gazette notifications, they added.
