Former Barishal's Additional Superintendent of Police Md Alep Uddin was shown arrested today in a case filed with Jatrabari Police Station over death of Zobayer Omar Khan in Dhaka's Jatrabari during the anti-discrimination students movement on August 5.
He was shown arrested in the case even though his name was not included in the first information report (FIR).
However, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sharifur Rahman placed him on a two-day remand after Investigation Officer Md Rassel Sardar, a sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station, produced him with a five-day remand prayer.
According to the remand application, SI Rassel said a team of Detective Branch of Police (DB) of Barishal arrested him from Barishal city last night on the orders of higher authorities. Primary investigation found his involvement with the killing, so he needs to be remanded to find out the vital clues about the incident.
The defence submitted an application, seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand on grounds that their client's name was not included in the FIR. He was implicated in the case just to harass him, the SI added.
The magistrate, however, rejected the bail petition.
According to the family, Alep Uddin was picked up from the office of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Barishal Range of Police last Tuesday around 2:00pm. Since then, the family has not been able to find him.
According to the case statement, Zobayer Omar Khan on information of Hasina's escape to India joined rally in Shahbagh on August 5. As he along with many others, reached Shanir Akhra, police fired bullets, teargas shells and sound grenades. Many people, including Zobayer got injured in the attack.
As people rushed him to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, the doctors declared him dead.
Zobayer's brother Zabed Imran Khan filed the case against 127 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on August 22.
