Jatiya Party today observed the first death anniversary of its founder HM Ershad with various programmes maintaining social distancing and health directives in wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

JP Chairman and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament GM Quader, along with central JP leaders, placed wreaths at the grave of former president Ershad at his Palli Nibas compound paying rich tribute to him around 11:00am.

Along with central and hundreds of local leaders and workers of JP, Quader observed a silence for some time, offered prayers seeking divine blessings and eternal peace for the departed soul.

Later, the leaders participated in discussions on the life, works and political philosophy of the former military ruler.

Ershad, who was ousted in 1990 after nine years of autocratic rule, died on July 14 last year at the age of 89 while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

Amid political turmoil after the assassination of Ziaur Rahman, Ershad took over the state power from then-president Abdus Sattar on March 24, 1982, as the Chief Martial Law Administrator (CMLA) through a bloodless coup.

He formed the Jatiya Party in 1986 and was elected president for a term of five years the same year through the third parliamentary election, triggering huge protests by other political parties.

Amid a fierce mass uprising by the opposition parties, he was finally forced to step down on December 6, 1990.

Ershad's body was buried at his Polli Nibas residence compound with full state honours on July 16 last year.

GM Quader and other party leaders returned to Dhaka in the afternoon and joined a doa mahfil and meeting at Jatiya Party's Kakrail central office in the capital.
