New theatre troupe Upstage made its debut staging the play Raat Bhor Bristi at Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samity on Friday.

The play is based on Indian writer Buddhadeb Basu’s novel with the same title.

Raat Bhor Brishti, which was published in 1967, was banned at the lower court on the grounds of vulgarity following a case that was filed by a college student in 1969. The ban was later overturned and the case was resolved in 1973.

The play revolves around a love triangle story involving three characters such as Monimala, Angshu and Jay. Kazi Roksana Roma, Prashanta Halder and Ronjan Dey Sathi acted in the play, which has been adapted and directed by Saif Sumon.

‘We selected this play because it talks about the complexities of conjugal lives. I have not made any changes to the original story while adapting it to the play,’ said Saif Sumon.

Raat Bhor Brishti is  the eighth production directed by Sumon. He has previously directed the plays like Namano Srijani,

Joborajok Bhalobasha, Otto Melar Opare, Mogoj

Shomachar, Open Tee Bioscope, Buddhir Dheki and Khoyar.
