The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and the Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall administration of Rajshahi University have locked horn over ousting outsiders and non-residential students from the hall and accommodating allotted students.

Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall administration issued a notice on Tuesday night, asking all non-residential students, outsiders and students of other halls who were illegally living at the hall to leave the hall by Wednesday.

In the same notice, the hall administration also asked the students along with the guardians to contact them if any of them wanted to speak to the hall administration about his problem in person.

However, none of the non-residential students left the hall or contacted the hall administration in-person within the provided time.

According to the hall officials, a total of 94 seats became vacant at the hall during the Covid-19 period and the hall administration invited applications from the students and allotted seats to 66 students in the hall on the basis of academic results and other considerations.

However, the administration has been able to accommodate only 22 students so far while 72 out of 94 seats have been occupied by the BCL activists and the non-residential students.

Campus sources said that the hall administration along with higher authorities of the university came to the hall at 4:00pm on Friday to oust the outsiders and non-residential students and accommodate residential students in their allotted rooms.

However, the hall administration could not start their drive till filing this report at 8:00pm due to BCL men’s stance.

Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall provost Jahangir Hossain could not be reached for his comment since he and other provosts sat a meeting at the hall.

Earlier, Jahangir Hossain told New Age that they would start the drive following a meeting with other hall provosts.

Niaz Morshed, president of Suhrawardy Hall unit Chhatra League, alleged that the current hall provost was a former Chhatra Dal leader.

‘The hall provost has been opposing the leaders and workers of Chhatra League since he took charge of this hall. He does not allot seats to the BCL leaders and workers,’ he alleged.

‘None of the BCL activists will leave the rooms they are residing as long as I am the BCL president of the hall unit. If the hall administration wants to oust any of the party activists, they will have to expel me first from the hall,’ he added.
