Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani
The nation on Friday observed the 41st anniversary of the death of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, the lifelong fighter for the rights of the oppressed and leader of the toiling masses.
His relentless struggle against imperialism, feudalism and for an exploitation-free secular and democratic society endeared him to the common people. He is known as Majlum Jananeta or the leader of the oppressed.
Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations took elaborate programmes marking the day. They commemorated Bhashani’s life and times through discussions as a politician with a difference.
President Abdul Hamid, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia issued messages on Thursday paying tributes to the great national leader.
Marking the death anniversary, political parties, cultural organisations and Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University organised programmes in Tangail.

MBSTU vice-chancellor professor Md Alauddin and family members of Bhashani placed wreaths on the grave of the veteran political leader on the university premises at Santosh in the morning.
They also offered prayers at the graveside of Bhashani after paying tribute.
Besides, political and social leaders also paid tribute to Bhashani by placing wreaths at his tomb since morning.
To mark the day, MBSTU distributed free food among the poor and arranged a special prayer session after jumma prayers.
Khoda-E-Khidmatgar and National Awami Party (Bhashani) jointly organised a discussion on life of Maulana Bhashani at the historical Darbar Hall in the morning.
Tangail municipality mayor Jamilur Rahman Miran spoke at the meeting as chief guest. The meeting was chaired by Bhashani’s grandson Hasrat Khan Bhashani, also the president of Khoda-E-Khidmatgar.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party organised a meeting on the grave premises which was addressed by its secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Krishak Sramik Janata League president Abdul Kader Siddique along with his party men also paid tribute to the Majlum Jananeta by placing a wreath on his grave.
Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, son of Haji Sharafat Ali Khan, was born at Dhangara in Sirajganj on December 12, 1880.
He died on November 17, 1976 leaving behind a chequered political life of struggles for the cause of the downtrodden.
Bhashani never hesitated to raise his voice whenever there was something wrong on this land’s political or social horizon or whenever vested interests tried to rob or infringe democratic rights.
Bhashani founded the Awami League in 1949 and later quit it and founded left-leaning the National Awami Party.
