The incident took place on Fuller Road near Salimullah Muslim (SM) Hall on Friday night

Six people, including four members of the Dhaka University (DU)'s proctorial body and one of its former students, were injured in attacks allegedly carried out by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on the campus on Friday night.

DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani confirmed the incident on Saturday.

The incident took place on Fuller Road near Salimullah Muslim (SM) Hall.

Eyewitnesses said members of the proctorial body got injured when they tried to rescue Rana Nasir, a former student of Theatre and Performance Studies Department, his younger brother Golam Nayeem alias Bappi, and Nuzhat Farhana, another former DU student of Marketing Department, from the attacks.

All of them, except Farhana, were provided first aid care at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Rana said he and his younger brother were hanging out with Nuzhat on Friday night. 

"Around 9:45pm, a group of students approached us and asked Bappi about his educational institution. Before any reply, they started beating him (Bappi) up," Nuzhat said.

“When Rana, who was standing nearby, came to rescue his brother, they left the scene,” she said. 

"However, we managed to nab one Porag,'' she added. 

After some time, as many as 50 or 60 students led by SM Hall Student Union Vice President (VP) MM Kamal Uddin appeared at the spot, got into an altercation with Rana, and beat him up also, eyewitnesses said.

DU Proctor Golam Rabbani said: "We are investigating the matter and will get the CCTV [closed-circuit television] footage and find the attackers."

Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasan said no case was filed in connection with the incident.

SM Hall VP Kamal Uddin said: ''I just went there to control the situation. No incident of beating happened there."
