Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Friday said democracy upheld through the 17th Lok Sabha elections in India as people had been able to elect their representatives exercising their voting rights.
‘The positive sign of India’s Lok Sabha elections is that the people of that country have been able to elect their representatives through voting. But the people of Bangladesh couldn’t do that in their polls,’ he said.
Giving their party’s reaction to Indian election results at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka, Khosru further said, ‘Democracy has become successful in India as the country could ensure the voting and constitutional rights of its people in the Lok Sabha polls.’
He also said democracy had got strengthened further in India through its recent election.
‘BJP, led by Narendra Modi, won the election with people’s votes. People have given BJP the mandate by casting their votes in favour of it,’ he added.
On behalf of BNP, Khosru said their acting chairman Tarique Rahman had already congratulated Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on the resounding election victory of his Bharatiya Janata Party.
He said their party’s congratulatory message to Modi would be sent through the Indian High Commission in Dhaka shortly.
Khosru said they wanted the Indian new government to give importance to the interest of the people of the two countries in intensifying the bilateral relations with Bangladesh.
Narendra Modi secured another five-year term after winning a landslide general election victory.
