The former lawmaker was suffering from cancer

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of valiant Freedom Fighter Shajahan Siraj.

In a condolence message, she recalled the contributions of Shajahan Siraj in the Liberation War.

She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul.

PM's press secretary Ihsanil Karim said that Sheikh Hasina talked to his wife and daughter  to console them and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

He breathed his last in Evercare Hospital at 3:30pm on Tuesday.

The 77-year-old former Tangail 4 lawmaker had long been suffering from cancer since 2012 and from several other old age complications, including diabetes, kidney ailments and high blood pressure.

“He had been ill and was being treated at home and hospital for a very long time,” his wife Rabeya Siraj said. Siraj was admitted to Evercare again on Monday after his condition worsened.

She said Siraj’s body would be brought on Wednesday to the family home in Tangail’s Kalihati upazila, where he was born on March 1, 1943.

Siraj, a senior BNP leader served as the environment minister in the Four-Party Alliance government from 2001 to 2006.
