Bangladesh Workers Party MP Rashed Khan Menon on Thursday expressed his disappointment in parliament for not accepting his proposal for allowing MPs to discuss the recent government decision to increase the gas prices in the house.

Earlier on July 7, speaking on a point of order, Menon said he had submitted a notice to the parliament for allowing a discussion in the house on the gas price hike.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal MP Hasanul Haq Inu, AL MP Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal, Workers Party MPs Fazle Hossain Badsha, Mustafa Lutfullah and Lutfun Nesa Khan gave consent to the notice.

Criticising the government for increasing the gas price, Menon said the government made the decision without discussing that in the house.

‘The government took the decision bypassing the parliament which is tantamount to humiliation of the house,’ he said.

Taking floor in a point of order, Menon also said that it would be a bad instance if the discussion on gas price hike did not take place in parliament.

He also demanded that decision of deputy speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah, who was presiding over the sitting at that time, about his notice.

‘After I filed the notice, MP Mayeen Uddin asked me that there was no benefit with submitting such notice as we are Garibullah, they [government] are Sonaullah and the parliament is Bokaullah,’ he added.

Using the words he apparently meant that the people are poor and powerless, the government just listens to the complaints and does nothing, and the parliamentarians just talk a lot about some issues, but they are not heard.

In reply, Fazle Rabbi told Menon that he will be informed later about his notice.

The session of the parliament, however, concluded on Thursday.

On June 30, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission increased the gas price by 32.8 per cent on an average for all consumers ignoring opposition from all sections of people and directly affecting 43.10 lakh consumers, including 42.81 household consumers.
