Nurul Haque Nur, one of the key leaders of quota reform movement, has been elected vice-president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) in Monday’s elections.

During the Ducsu polls, quota reformists announced 17 candidates out of 25 posts in the Ducsu polls. However, they have secured two posts– vice president and social welfare affairs secretary.
Hailing from Patuakhali’s Golachipa, Nur – a student of Dhaka University's English department – is the joint convener for the Bangladesh Council to Protect General Students’ Rights, a movement seeking change in the existing quota system in government recruitment tests.
He is also the organizing secretary of Association of English Learners (AEL) of DU and a resident of Muhsin Hall.
The movement for quota reform began in February last year after students and job seekers demanded the quota be reduced from 56% to 10%. They also demanded recruitment in vacant posts on the basis of merit if eligible candidates were not found under the quota, an end to special recruitment tests for quota candidates and a single age limit for all jobseekers.
The movement was intensified in April after clashes among activists, police, and Chhatra League on the DU campus took place. Among other leaders, Nur faced attacks and intimidation because of his involvement.
Police in April picked up three leaders of the movement, including Nur, for questioning and released them shortly.
Following the widespread protest, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on April 11, announced that all quotas would be abolished which later led to withdrawal of the protest.
