Ruling Awami League candidate in the by-election to Dhaka 14 parliamentary constituency Aga Khan Mintu is set to be elected unopposed as other candidates withdrew their nomination papers on Wednesday.

Confirming the matter, assistant returning officer Mohammad Shahjalal told reporters that three candidates—Mostakur Rahman of Jatiya Party, Abu Hanif of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and AYM Kamrul Islam of Bangladesh Nationalist Front—withdrew their candidatures on the ground of Covid situation.

He said that the candidatures of independent candidates Mohammad Moniruzzman and Ruhul Amin Sarkar were cancelled in the scrutiny earlier.

He said that of them, Moniruzzaman submitted signatures of four people who were not voters of the constituency while Ruhul Amin had submitted incomplete nomination paper.

The constituency fell vacant following the death of AL lawmaker M Aslamul Haque died at a hospital in Dhaka on April 4.
