Bangladesh’s police chief has ordered a zero-tolerance against extortion on roads and highways across the country ahead of the home-going rush in Eid.

“Departmental action will be taken if any policeman is found involved in extortion,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary said.

Calling his force to ensure hassle-free Eid journey for holidaymakers, the IGP ordered to take step so that no one can carry passengers on the roof.

He also asked the police officials to remain alert in preventing water transports from carrying any excessive passengers to avoid any untoward incident.

Speaking through video conference at Police Headquarters today, he also instructed to curb vehicles on highways without driving license and fitness certificate.

“We won’t let any bus to move if there is any anomaly found in this regard,” the IGP warned. He also ordered the police officials not to halt any vehicle on the roads and highways without any specific allegation and reason.

He said, CCTV camera will be installed at different strategic points on the highways to prevent extortion and bring discipline on the roads.

The police officials have been asked to bring all vehicles under the coverage of CCTV camera seven days before and after of the Eid-ul-Fitr to make the efforts a success, he added.

He also issued an instruction to enhance overall security across the country and increase vigilance against militancy and terrorism.
